Purpose: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) are reported to have an increased prevalence of premature cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, it remains controversial whether this finding is related to worst metabolic and inflammatory profile and whether there are differences on atherosclerotic burden between quadriplegic and paraplegic patients. Methods: We evaluated 37 nondiabetic, nonhypertensive and nonsmoker men (23 with SCI and 14 healthy subjects) by medical history, blood pressure measurement, anthropometry and laboratory tests. Echo-doppler examination evaluated common carotid intima-media-thickness (IMT). Results: The table shows the features of enrolled individuals and demonstrates that carotid IMT was significantly higher in SCI patients in comparison to healthy subjects. Further analysis of covariance adjusted for age, systolic blood pressure and Log C-Reactive Protein confirmed that carotid IMT was significantly increased in both quadriplegic and paraplegic individuals in comparison to controls (p<0.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that patients with SCI develop increased carotid atherosclerosis independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors and SCI level.
